RER from Paris Gare du Nord to Gare de LyonYou will need to change trains in Paris from the Eurostar to a French train. This involves a 10 minute trip on the underground, which is split into the Metro, marked by an M in a circle, and the double decker regional express trains which are marked by RER in a circle. The trains run from about 5am to gone midnight. When you leave the Eurostar terminal at Gare du Nord follow the RER signs which lead you through the station across a bridge walkway to some escalators. Just before these you'll see some free-standing vending machines labeled 'Billets' on the right. You can request English language so it is very easy and you will pay about a Euro for a single ticket. Head down the escalator marked with a D in a green circle. The D line runs through Paris from D1, a station called Orry-La-Ville - Coye in the North through Gare du Nord, then south to Gare de Lyon and on to the southern suburbs, where the line splits into two. So all south bound trains are heading for either D2, a station called Melun or D3, a station called Malesherbes. Either of these are fine for you if you are heading south, but just make sure you get on the right platform by checking on the board what the final destination of the train is before you get on. The trains go every few minutes and you will travel two stops to Gare de Lyon. When you get off follow signs for the 'Grandes Lignes' to get to the main station and your next train. Obviously the same applies on the return journey, but you will be heading for the D1 Orry-La-Ville direction platform. When you are planning your trip allow yourselves 40 minutes to get across Paris. It usually takes no more than 20 but you don't want to miss your connection if you get a bit lost or delayed. Train from Paris Gare de Lyon to Bourg-st-MauriceThere are trains every day running between Paris and Bourg. They cost from 25 to 120 Euros return depending on when you travel and how far in advance you book, and the journey time can vary from 4 and half hours to 9 hours if you opt for a train with a bed and travel overnight. |
