There is a Eurostar terminal in Bourg-st-Maurice which is the town in the Les Arcs lift system where we have one of our chalets. Montchavin, which is the town in the La Plagne lift system where we have our other chalet, is only a 15 minute taxi drive away from the railway station in Bourg, so the train is a very easy way of getting to either of our chalets.

There are several services running between London and Bourg st Maurice every day of the year, which involve a change of trains in Paris. They take about 8 hours and can cost as little as £95 rtn.

There are also direct Eurostar services to Bourg-st-Maurice from Kings Cross in London which are often called the 'Ski Train'. The 'night train' goes every Friday night and the 'day train' every Saturday morning. They are the quickest option, taking only 7 hrs and 20 minutes.

The pros about travelling to the Alps by train

You can travel overnight on the train which allows you to go up the mountain on your arrival and departure days, so you don't waste any of your precious holiday time. Another benefit is that check in only takes a few minutes and you keep your luggage with you, so no lengthy delays when you arrive. If you are staying at our chalet in Bourg you don't have to worry about the hassle of transfers from the airport because we are a few minutes walk from where the train drops you off.

It is also obviously the most environmentally friendly option which is well worth considering if we all want to continue enjoying the mountains for years to come. According to the Eurostar website a return journey to the Alps by train is now carbon neutral (at no extra cost to travellers) whereas a Heathrow to Geneva flight releases 191kg of CO2 per person. It's a no brainer really.

The cons about travelling to the Alps by train

The only real down side is that if you need to travel at peak times, or are not able to book in advance it can be quite expensive, but as long as you are careful about when you travel, and plan ahead it can also be one of the cheapest options.
